Where did summer go? It's already Labor Day! Though any change in seasons is exciting, I have to say that I'm not quite ready for summer to end. But, to make the transition more pleasant, my housemates and I decided to give a proper farewell to summer and ring in our senior year with a grill out. We've grilled brats too many times to count this summer, so now we've got a nice routine, but the first time we grilled out, one of my housemates and I (who are both Wisconsinites) had to teach the others how it's done. What's the Wisconsin Way you might ask? BEER. SAUERKRAUT. and more beer! Let's make this very clear: It's the only way to have a brat.
brats: the wisconsin way
2 cans of beer (it can be cheap beer!)
1 onion
brats, for however many people you are serving
1 can Frank's sauerkraut (it's THE best brand!)
Bring the beer to a boil in a large saucepan or skillet. Slice the onion and add them and the brats to the beer. Boil for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the grill on medium. Once the grill has preheated and the brats are done boiling, grill the brats for about 10 minutes, rotating half way through, but keeping the lid closed at all other times. While the brats are grilling, add the sauerkraut to the beer and let simmer until ready to serve the brats. I'm addicted to ketchup, so I smother my brat in ketchup, but you can garnish however you'd like!
